    Service Overview

Why most garden fences sag and lean within five years — and how to build one that doesn't.

Fencing looks simple. The reasons most garden fences sag, lean or blow over within five years are also simple: undersized or under-treated posts, posts not concreted properly, panels nailed straight to posts, and cheap timber that absorbs water like a sponge. Get the basics right and a fence stands square for 20 years.

Ridgeline uses pressure-treated structural timber posts (or concrete posts where preferred), set in correctly mixed post-mix or wet-mixed concrete to proper depths. Panels are fitted into post slots or onto secure brackets — never just nailed flat to the post.

For close-board and bespoke designs, we use individually fixed feather-edge boards on arris rails, allowing single boards to be replaced over time without rebuilding the panel. For gates, we build full-frame braced timber gates with proper hinges, fall-bolts and drop-bolts engineered to the gate's weight.

Whether you need a single panel replaced or a full perimeter and bespoke driveway gates, we build to the same standard.

The cost of getting it wrong

What goes wrong when fencing is rushed.

Fencing isn't difficult — but it's easy to do badly. Cheap installs are rebuilds within five years.

    Posts rotting at ground level

Untreated or under-treated posts rot at the soil interface, then snap in the first big wind.

    Inadequate concrete

Posts set too shallow or with too little concrete lever out under wind load.

    Panels nailed direct to posts

Panels can't move with seasonal expansion, and a single broken panel means rebuilding the run.

    Misaligned gates

Gates hung on under-spec hinges, or onto twisted posts, won't close or latch within a year.

    Mismatched panel heights

Lazy installs ignore ground levels — the run looks visibly stepped or wavy from day one.

    The Benefits

What you actually get when Ridgeline delivers your project.

    Pressure-treated timber

Posts and rails treated for ground contact — typical 15–25 year working life.

    Properly concreted posts

Posts set to correct depth in correctly mixed concrete — no leaning, no levering out.

    Fast install

Most domestic fencing runs complete in 1–3 days.

    Square, plumb, level

Set out properly so the run reads clean and level — not stepped or wavy.

    Bespoke gates

Properly braced timber gates with engineer-spec hinges that close and latch first time, every time.

    Built once, not twice

A properly built fence lasts 15–25 years. Cheap fencing is a rebuild every 5–7.

    In detail

Panel, close-board, post-and-rail and bespoke — every fencing type, done right.

Fencing styles vary by garden, taste and use. Here's the work we do most often.

    Panel fencing (lap and waney-edge)

The most common UK domestic fencing — fitted into concrete or timber posts with proper post caps and gravel boards.

    Close-board fencing

Individual feather-edge boards fixed to arris rails between posts. Stronger, more secure, longer-lasting and easier to repair than panel fencing.

    Post-and-rail fencing

Open agricultural-style fencing for paddocks, large gardens and rural properties.

    Bespoke gates

Full-frame braced timber gates from single pedestrian gates up to large twin driveway gates. Proper hinges, fall-bolts, drop-bolts and locks.

    Concrete posts and gravel boards

For maximum lifespan and easy panel replacement over time, concrete posts and gravel boards are an excellent choice — no rot at ground level, ever.

    Disposal of old fencing

Old fencing stripped, loaded and removed responsibly. Site left clean.

    How much does fencing cost?+

Standard panel fencing typically costs £80–£140 per metre supplied and fitted, depending on style and post type. Close-board runs more. Bespoke gates from £400 for pedestrian to £2,500+ for double driveway gates. Every quote is fixed and itemised.

How long does fencing take to install?+

Most domestic runs complete in 1–3 days. Larger jobs and bespoke gates can take longer.

Do you remove the old fence?+

Yes. Strip-out and disposal of old fencing is included in every quote.

How long will the new fence last?+

Pressure-treated timber fencing typically lasts 15–25 years. Concrete-posted fencing with treated panels can exceed 25 years. Gates last 15–20 years with normal maintenance.

    Do I need planning permission?+

Front boundary fencing above 1m and rear/side fencing above 2m typically requires planning permission. We'll confirm on the free site visit.

    Whose fence is it?+

Boundary ownership is usually shown on title deeds. Where ownership is unclear, we'll advise on the most common conventions and recommend confirming with neighbours before work.

Can you match an existing fence style?+

Yes. We'll match panel style, height and post type wherever possible for a consistent boundary.

    Do you supply concrete posts?+

Yes. Concrete posts and gravel boards are an excellent option for long-lasting low-maintenance fencing — typically priced as an upgrade option in your quote.

    Can you build security gates?+

Yes. Pedestrian and driveway gates with proper locks, drop-bolts and hinges. We can also coordinate automated gate systems with specialist gate-automation installers.

    How do I get started?+
