    Why most roof failures are detail failures — and how Ridgeline gets the details right.

    A roof has thousands of points where water could get in: ridge lines, hip lines, valleys, eaves, verges, abutments, chimney junctions, vent pipes, soil stacks, dormer cheeks, skylight upstands. Each one is a potential leak. The difference between a roof that lasts 50 years and one that fails at 10 is whether each of those details was executed correctly.

    Ridgeline approaches every roof — new build, re-roof, repair or alteration — as a structural and detail-led job. The structural carpentry is built straight, plumb and to the engineer's specification. The roofing membrane is correctly lapped at every junction. Battens are gauged to the tile manufacturer's specification, not eyeballed. Lead flashings are dressed properly into mortar joints. Ridges are bedded and pointed cleanly.

    We work across pitched and flat roofs, in a full range of materials: clay and concrete plain tiles, interlocking concrete tiles, natural Welsh and Spanish slate, fibre-cement slate, EPDM single-ply rubber, and built-up felt systems where appropriate.

    All work is fully insured, and major materials carry manufacturer warranties of 10–50 years. Workmanship is guaranteed.

    Roofs vary enormously by property age, style and use. Here's the work we do most often.

    Pitched tile roofs

    Concrete and clay tiles in plain and interlocking profiles, fixed to manufacturer-specified gauges and nailing patterns.

    Pitched slate roofs

    Natural Welsh, Spanish and fibre-cement slate. Hand-graded for natural slate to match thickness and size for a clean, even finish.

    Flat roofs (EPDM and felt)

    EPDM single-ply rubber for 50-year warranty performance; high-performance built-up felt where appropriate.

    Lead flashings & weather details

    Lead dressed properly into mortar joints at all abutments, chimneys and box-gutters. The most-failed detail on cheap roofs — done right by us.

    Re-roofs vs full new builds

    We strip back to rafters, inspect and repair structure, fit new breathable underlay and battens, and re-lay or replace tiles. New builds get the same level of care from the rafter up.

    Make-safe within 24–48 hours where capacity allows; full reinstatement to insurance scope, working directly with loss adjusters.

    How much does a re-roof cost?+

    Most full re-roofs on semi-detached homes in the North West range from £6,000–£14,000 depending on size, materials and structural repairs. Larger detached properties typically £12,000–£25,000. Every quote is fixed and itemised.

    How long does it take?+

    Most semi-detached re-roofs take 4–7 days; detached properties 7–14 days. Weather-dependent.

    Can you do emergency repairs?+

    Yes. Storm damage and active leaks prioritised; we make safe within 24–48 hours where capacity allows and arrange permanent repair.

    What warranty do I get?+

    Manufacturer material warranties of 25–50 years depending on system, plus our own workmanship guarantee.

    Will I need scaffolding?+

    Yes — proper independent scaffolding is required for any pitched re-roof for safety and access. The cost is included in your fixed quote.

    Do I need planning permission?+

    Like-for-like re-roofs are usually Permitted Development. Changes to material colour or roof line in conservation areas may require planning — we'll advise.

    Can you remove a chimney?+

    Yes. Chimney removal and roof make-good is common; we structurally support, weather-detail and finish so the result reads as if the chimney was never there.

    Do you work with insurance companies?+

    Yes. We work directly with loss adjusters and insurance contractors on storm and impact damage reinstatement.

    How long will the new roof last?+

    A properly built tiled or slated roof has a typical service life of 50–80 years; EPDM flat roofs carry 50-year warranties.
