    Service Overview

Why proper structural carpentry is the difference between a building that stands for 100 years and one that doesn't.

Structural carpentry is the load-bearing skeleton of a building — the roof, the floor, the beams that hold everything else up. Done correctly, it's invisible: nothing sags, nothing cracks, nothing creaks. Done incorrectly, it's the most expensive mistake a homeowner can make, because everything finished on top of it has to be ripped out to fix it.

Ridgeline's structural carpentry is the work other builders call us in for. We cut traditional roofs to engineer-stamped drawings, install trussed roof systems on new-builds, frame complex hip-and-valley intersections, and integrate steel beams with timber framing on extensions and conversions.

Every structural job is built strictly to engineer's drawings, with proper fixings (not just nail guns), correct timber grades and full Building Regs compliance. Where calculations are needed, we work with trusted structural engineers we've used for years.

Whether you're a homeowner extending your property, a self-builder framing a new home, or a main contractor needing experienced carpenters who can read a drawing — we deliver the structural work to a standard your Building Control inspector will sign off without comment.

The cost of getting it wrong

What happens when structural carpentry is botched.

Bad structural work doesn't show up immediately. It shows up six months, a year, or five years later — and by then, fixing it means tearing out everything built on top.

    Sagging floors and cracking ceilings

Undersized joists or wrong timber grades cause floors to deflect over time. The cracks downstairs are the first warning.

    Roof spread

Without proper ties or ridge support, a cut roof slowly pushes the supporting walls outward — a structural failure that's expensive to remediate.

    Building Control rejection

Inspectors reject work that doesn't match the engineer's drawings. You pay twice: once for the wrong work, once to fix it.

    Insurance void

Structural work that doesn't comply with Building Regs invalidates your home insurance — including any future claims unrelated to the work.

    Resale problems

Survey reports flag structural defects aggressively. A botched roof structure can knock 5–10% off a sale price or kill the sale entirely.

    Our Process

A clear, step-by-step system from first call to final handover.

    1. 01

      Drawing Review

We review the structural engineer's drawings and confirm timber spec, fixings and any details that need clarifying.

    2. 02

      Materials & Setting Out

Correct grade timber, engineered joists, fixings and connectors ordered and delivered to plan.

    3. 03

      Cut & Frame

Precision-cut on-site or assembled from prefabricated trusses, all to drawing tolerances.

    4. 04

      Inspection & Sign-off

Building Control inspection at structural stage; any required adjustments completed immediately.

    5. 05

      Handover to Following Trades

Structure handed over plumb, level and ready for roofing, plastering or floor finishes.

    The Benefits

What you actually get when Ridgeline delivers your project.

    Engineer-spec accurate

Built strictly to drawing — no 'near enough', no improvisation on load-bearing elements.

    Building Regs compliant

Every job inspected and signed off by Building Control without rework.

    Trusted by main contractors

We're the carpenters local builders call when their reputation is on the line.

    On programme

We turn up when we said we would and finish when we said we would. Self-builders and contractors plan around it.

    Steel-and-timber composite

Confident handling of structures combining steel beams with engineered timber — common on conversions and extensions.

    Single point of responsibility

One firm responsible for the whole structure — not five subcontractors blaming each other when something fails.

    In detail

Cut roofs, trussed roofs, engineered floors and the structures we build day to day.

Structural carpentry isn't one job — it's a category. Here are the specific structures we build most often and what each requires.

    Traditional cut roofs

Cut on-site from individual rafters, ridge boards and wall plates. Used on extensions, character properties, and any structure where prefab trusses aren't viable. Requires skilled carpenters who can read pitch, set out birdsmouths and cut intersecting hips and valleys.

    Trussed roof systems

Factory-engineered roof trusses lifted into position and braced. Faster than cut roofs and ideal for new-builds and large extensions. Requires precise wall plate setting-out and proper diagonal and longitudinal bracing.

    Hip-and-valley intersections

Where two roof planes meet at angles, accurate hip-and-valley framing is critical to prevent leaks and sagging. We've built these on extensions across the North West for over a decade.

    Engineered timber floor joists

I-joists and metal-web joists for spans where solid timber isn't practical. We size, cut and install to manufacturer-specific guidance for openings, cuts and bearings.

    Steel beam integration

Many extensions and loft conversions require steel beams to remove load-bearing walls. We coordinate with steel suppliers and structural engineers, then frame the timber structure correctly onto and around the steel.

    Wall plates, lintels & openings

Properly bedded wall plates, correctly sized lintels and structurally framed openings — the small details that decide whether the structure performs for a century or starts cracking in five years.

Do you work for main contractors as well as homeowners?+

Yes. A significant share of our structural carpentry work is direct subcontract to local builders and self-builders who need experienced carpenters they can rely on to deliver to drawing, on programme.

Can you cut a complex roof on-site?+

Yes. Alex and the team have over 15 years' experience cutting traditional roofs including hips, valleys and dormers. Drawings supplied, or we work directly with your structural engineer.

    Do you install trussed rafters?+

Yes. We coordinate with truss suppliers, set out wall plates accurately, lift and brace the trusses, and tie everything in correctly. Building Control sign-off included.

    What about steel-and-timber work?+

Common on extensions and loft conversions. We work alongside steel suppliers and structural engineers to integrate steel beams with timber floors and roofs correctly.

    Are you Building Regs compliant?+

Always. Every structural job is built to engineer's drawings and inspected by Building Control. We don't sign anything off until the inspector is satisfied.

    How quickly can you start?+

Lead times vary by season but we typically slot structural carpentry work within 2–6 weeks. Emergency reinstatement after storm or fire damage is prioritised.

Do you supply structural engineer's calculations?+

We work with trusted local structural engineers and can include their fees in your quotation, or work to drawings you've already commissioned.

What's the lifespan of properly built structural timber?+

Correctly graded, fixed and protected structural timber lasts the lifetime of the building — 100+ years is normal for properly built roof and floor structures.

Do you do insurance reinstatement work?+

Yes. We work directly with loss adjusters and insurance contractors on storm and fire damage reinstatement.

    How do I get started?+

Send drawings to ridgelinersc@gmail.com or call 07368 183733. We'll review and come back with a fixed quotation within a working week.
